Marlei Martinez Reporter Reel

Marlei Martinez is an Emmy-award winning weekday general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for WVTM 13 News in Birmingham, AL. She joined the Hearst/NBC News team in January 2016. Since moving to the Magic City, Martinez has reported on the impeachment investigation and resignation of Governor Robert Bentley, tornado coverage and gun violence. During one interview about gun violence, gunmen fired at Martinez, her photographer and the woman she was interviewing while they were recording on camera.

Prior to WVTM 13, Martinez was a senior managing producer for CNN’s morning show, “New Day,”​ where she reviews all tape packages, scripts and show opens before air. She joined CNN in 2013, primarily tape & field producing daily packages for the morning show, including Kate Bolduan’s interview with President Barack Obama at the White House, Michaela Pereira’s “Roots”​ journey in Jamaica, Chris Cuomo’s coverage of the Navy Yard Shooting in D.C., the birth of the royal baby in London, the tornadoes in Moore, Oklahoma, the Ariel Castro case in Cleveland, the IRS Scandal in Cincinnati and the “Duck Dynasty”​ scandal.

Prior to CNN, Martinez produced for ABC News’​ “Good Morning America”​ where she won an Emmy along with the GMA staff for “Outstanding Morning Show.”​ While at GMA, she conducted interviews, produced, wrote, shot and edited packages. While at ABC News, she also worked for the hidden camera show, “What Would You Do?”​ and the investigative series, “20/20,”​ covering Diane Sawyer’s “Jaycee Dugard”​ and “Jacqueline Kennedy”​ exclusives.

Martinez is an alumnus of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School where she filed on-air and dotcom stories as Bureau Chief for the “ABC News On Campus”​ program. She placed 1st in the national “Hearst TV Feature Reporting”​ competition and the Syracuse Press Club College TV News competition. Martinez graduated summa cum laude with honors from Newhouse with a Bachelor’s of Science in Broadcast Journalism. She is also a proud member of the AAJA.
